IUP soccer star

Seneca Valley grad Emily Thomas, a sophomore on the Division II Indiana University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team, scored two goals in a 3-2 win over Kutztown in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championship game on Nov. 7.

Thomas was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.

Goalkeeper of the Year

Hampton High School graduate Jamie Pelusi, a junior at Pitt, was named Big East Conference Women's Soccer Goalkeeper of the Year in a vote of the league's 12 coaches.

Pelusi was also a first-team (11 players) all-conference pick. Pitt finished the season at 6-10-1.

College football

North Catholic grad Ben Heisel, a senior defensive end at Division II Clarion University, led the Golden Eagles (3-8) in tackles for losses with 18 for minus-63 yards. He was sixth overall in tackles for Clarion with 48 (21 solo).

Hampton High grad Ryan Daniel, a redshirt sophomore place-kicker at Division II Slippery Rock University, finished second on The Rock (4-7) in scoring with 62 points. He connected on 10 of 15 field-goal attempts and 32 of 35 extra-point kicks. Springdale grad Brian Godfrey, a senior defensive lineman at Division II Slippery Rock University, was third on the team in solo tackles with 25. He tied for second in tackles for losses with eight for minus-21 yards).

Seneca Valley grad Mike Sklarsky, a junior linebacker at Division III Washington & Jefferson College, is third on the Presidents (10-0) in tackles with 72 (40 solo) and in tackles for losses (91*2).

Seneca Valley grad Brad Stotsky, a junior defensive back at Division III Allegheny College, was the North Coast Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the last week of October after tallying 11 solo tackles in a 16-10 overtime win over Wabash (Ind.) College on Oct. 30.

College soccer

Butler Area High School grad Nicole Hilderbrand, a senior at Robert Morris University, was the Northeast Conference Women's Soccer Player of the Week for the fourth week of October. She scored the goals in 1-0 wins over Long Island (Oct. 22) and Wagner (Oct. 24).

Fox Chapel grad Amanda Zambrano, a junior forward on the Franklin & Marshall College women's soccer team, led the team in goals with 10. She has 32 for her career. The Diplomats were 6-10.

North Allegheny grad Ashley Hughes, a freshman on the Allegheny College women's soccer team, led the Gators (9-7-2) in goals with seven.

Pine-Richland grad Kate Klingensmith, a junior midfielder at Grove City College, was a Presidents' Athletic Conference first-team (11 players) women's soccer all-star.

Hampton High grad Nichole Constantini, a senior midfielder at LaRoche College, was a first-team (11 players) Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference women's soccer all-star.

North Allegheny grad James Steidel, a senior midfielder at Carnegie Mellon University, was a first-team (11 players) University Athletic Association men's soccer all-star.

Volleyball star

Knoch High grad Elaine Voltz, a sophomore at Penn State-Behrend, was the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Women's Volleyball Player of the Week for the first week of November. She was also named a first-team (seven players) AMCC all-star.

Basketball clinic

Any boy or girl enrolled in grades 1 through 6 interested in registering for the Junior Royals Ballhandling Team sponsored by Vincentian Academy should contact coach Buzz Gabos at 412 364-6217. The cost for participating is $25.
