High school highlights: Elizabeth Forward dominates Belle Vernon to complete sweep

For the second consecutive day, the Elizabeth Forward baseball team dominated Class 3A top-ranked Belle Vernon. The Warriors pitched a 7-0 shutout on Monday at Elizabeth Forward, then registered a 13-1 blowout in a road game on Tuesday that was stopped three times by rain.

JB Crovak pitched 6 ⅔ innings, allowing only five hits and one run, while striking out 10 batters to lead Elizabeth Forward (8-2, 5-1) in Tuesday's victory. It was the seventh consecutive section win against Belle Vernon for the Warriors.

Belle Vernon (8-2, 6-2) committed six errors in Monday's loss and five in Tuesday's game.

Cy Herchelroath had two hits for the Warriors, a two-run single and a bases-clearing triple. He also scored twice and stole two bases. Herchelroath also pitched a three-hit shutout in Monday's game.

More Baseball

• Apollo-Ridge (3-6, 2-5) jumped out to a 5-1 lead after two innings and held on to record a 5-4 upset of Class 2A No. 3 O.L. Sacred Heart (7-5, 5-1) in a Section 3 game played at Apollo-Ridge. Noah Stewart had two hits and drove in two runs for the Vikings. Gage Wingard had two hits and pitched six innings to pick up the victory. Dean Douglass and Thomas Medwig each had two hits for the Chargers.

• MJ Maruschak, Brayden Radue, Ben Peterson and Massimo Falconi each had two hits to lead Class 6A No. 2 Canon-McMillan (10-3, 6-2) to a 15-3 win against visiting Mt. Lebanon (3-9, 2-3) in a Section 2 game that needed only five innings. Maruschak pitched five innings and allowed only five hits and one earned run to pick up the victory.

• Jake Stephenson had four hits, scored twice and drove in one run as Class 3A No. 3 Waynesburg (10-0, 6-0) remained unbeaten with a 14-5 win against visiting Seton LaSalle (5-5, 4-3) in Section 4. Ethan Kiger and Grant Pack each drove in three runs for the Raiders. Austin Surber and Alex VanSickle combined to allow only six hits and three earned runs.

• Todd Kagle had three hits and four RBIs to lead Quaker Valley (6-4, 3-2) to a 13-8 upset of Class 3A No. 2 Ellwood City (8-4, 4-2) in a Section 1 game played at Quaker Valley. Kagle was also the winning pitcher. Nolan Wagoner, Henry Zupanc and Holden Kirkham each had two hits for the Quakers.

• Avella improved its record to 5-1 in Class 1A Section 1 and 9-1 overall with an 11-3 win against visiting Jeannette (2-6, 0-3). Logan Fedak had three hits for the Eagles, while Bryce Wright and Hayden Gatewood had two hits each. Chas Rush picked up the victory.

• Liam Cooper pitched 3 ⅓ innings of hitless, scoreless relief as Class 6A No. 1 North Allegheny (7-2, 5-0) defeated No. 5 Central Catholic (5-6, 2-6) for the second straight day, this time by a 6-3 tally, in Section 2. Tigers starter Nate Persinger allowed three hits and three unearned runs. Christian Simons drove in two runs for the Tigers.

• Trey Ross had three hits, while Sam Patton and Joseph Campoli each had two hits, as Class 2A No. 1 Shenango (8-2, 5-1) posted 14-7 win against visiting New Brighton (6-4, 5-2) in Section 2. All three scored twice and Campoli drove in three runs. Tyler Houk pitched 4 ⅔ innings to pick up the victory.

• Colton Whitlock pitched a complete game to lead Burrell (6-4, 6-2) to a 7-2 win against visiting Ligonier Valley (2-6, 1-3) in Class 3A Section 3. Whitlock allowed only eight hits and two runs and struck out four batters. Isaac Lacinski had two hits for the Bucs and Trey Coury drove in two runs.

Softball

• Meadow Ferri allowed only two hits and one unearned run, while striking out 19 batters, to lead Class 2A No. 2 Chartiers-Houston (10-0, 4-0) to an 11-1 victory against host Seton LaSalle (3-4, 1-2) in Section 2. Ferri also hit a home run, walked three times, scored four times and drove in two runs. Ella Richey and Aubree Randolph had two hits each for the Bucs.

• Avery Herrington drove in five runs on three hits to lead Class 5A No. 4 Baldwin (9-2, 5-1) to a 20-5 win in four innings against Connellsville in Section 4. Herrington hit a grand slam, while teammates Reese Temme and Mackenzie Bowen each hit a two-run homer. Jordan Gerendash and Gabby Jaquay each had three hits for the Highlanders.

• Uniontown (6-4, 4-2) scored eight runs in the third inning and rolled to a 10-5 road victory against Belle Vernon (5-6, 3-2) in Class 4A Section 2. Lauren White, Disaya Craggette, Juliet White, and Emmaleigh Noah each had two hits for the Red Raiders. Noah also picked up the victory.

• Ava Clark struck out 18 batters and allowed only six hits and two runs as Brownsville (5-3, 2-1) posted a 3-2 victory against visiting Waynesburg (5-4, 2-1) in Class 2A Section 4. The Falcons scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning on a wild pitch. Gina Tedrow picked up the loss despite allowing only six hits and three runs.
