It may only be a few weeks into the season — and there are teams that have yet to play a game, much less take on a section opponent — but that doesn’t mean it’s too early to see some changes in the Post-Gazette weekly softball rankings.
Easily the biggest move is in Class 5A, where Penn-Trafford, which was unranked coming into the season, has vaulted all the way to No. 1, replacing Shaler, which had a couple of tough losses to Hempfield and — surprise, surprise — the Warriors themselves.
It shouldn’t be much of a shock Penn-Trafford made the leap. The Warriors were a WPIAL semifinalist a year ago and had a lot returning but got caught up in a numbers game with so many quality teams in the classification.
Another team that made the jump to No. 1 in its classification — more of a hop, really — is South Park, which switched spots with Mohawk in Class 3A.
