Spring sports highlights: Seneca Valley edges North Allegheny with run in seventh

North Allegheny looked like the No. 1 Class 6A team in the WPIAL through its first two games when the Tigers rolled over Connellsville and Canon-McMillan.

Their Section 1 opener was a different story.

Seneca Valley senior Quinn Burke hit a shot off the left-field fence to score Ethan Edkins with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh to give the Raiders (3-1, 1-0) a 2-1 victory over the Tigers (2-1, 0-1).

• Eric Chalus threw six scoreless innings and struck out 10 as Class 5A No. 3 Bethel Park (3-0, 1-0) topped Trinity, 1-2, 0-1) in Section 4. Ray Altmeyer had a bases-loaded, three-run double in the sixth for the Black Hawks.

• Andrew Muraco was 3 for 3 with two doubles, a home run and two RBIs, and Brian Pirone struck out six to help Class 5A No. 2 Franklin Regional (3-0, 1-0) to a 4-0 Section 1 victory over rival Penn-Trafford (1-1, 0-1).

• Mars (3-1, 2-1) did most of its damage late as the Class 5A No. 4 Planets struck for seven runs in the bottom of the fourth. Alex Heavner struck out eight and allowed two hits in five innings and also drove in three as the Planets rolled to an 11-1 Section 2 victory against Armstrong (2-4, 0-3). Mars has scored double-digit runs three times this season.

Softball

• On paper it was a matchup of the No. 2 and No. 3 teams in Class 6A, but Bethel Park (3-0) made short work of second-ranked host North Allegheny (1-3). Sandra Soltes hit a fourth-inning grand slam and Reagan Milliken chipped in a two-run shot in the second as the No. 3 Black Hawks rolled to a 13-2, 5-inning win. The Tigers have now dropped three in a row for the first time since losing the final two games in the 2016 WPIAL playoffs and the 2017 season opener.

• Katie Lampe and London Whipkey each drove in four runs as Class 1A Np. 1 West Greene (3-0) rolled over Carmichaels (2-3), 17-4, in a non-section matchup.
