Pitcher Jarett Bach is having a terrific season for the Yough baseball team, and the Cougars are riding high with him.
Yough, a team that has finished above .500 only once in the past 11 seasons, is the Post-Gazette’s new No. 1-ranked team in WPIAL Class 4A. The Cougars are 7-4 overall.
Bach is a 6-foot-4, 195-pound left-handed senior who is 4-0 and has been overpowering at times. Bach, who signed with Pitt last November, had 16 strikeouts in two different games against Greensburg Salem and Albert Gallatin. Bach defeated Greensburg Salem, 3-1, and Greensburg Salem is the P-G’s No. 2-ranked 4A team.
The only time Yough has finished a season above .500 in the past 11 years was 2015, when the Cougars were 11-5 and lost in the first round of the playoffs.
Yough is one of two new No. 1 teams in this week’s rankings. The other is Serra in Class 2A. The Eagles moved up from No. 2 after Neshannock, previously undefeated and ranked No. 1, lost twice in the past week to Shenango (15-0) and Laurel (5-4).
In Class 6A, Penn-Trafford stayed at No. 1 despite a 5-2 loss to Plum April 11. Penn-Trafford is 10-1. No. 2 Pine-Richland is 10-3 and has won seven in a row. But Penn-Trafford owns a 13-2 victory against Pine-Richland.
