While his brother, Will, is one of the WPIAL’s best pitchers, David Bednar is pitching in the San Diego Padres minor-league system. A 35th-round draft pick out of Lafayette College in 2016, Bednar plays in advanced Class A with the Lake Elsinore Storm (Calif.). In his last 10 outings, Bednar pitched 13⅓ innings of relief and gave up only three earned runs and 12 hits with 15 strikeouts. He is now 2-1 with three saves.

Peters Township/Lacrosse

The Seton Hill University men’s lacrosse team made it to the NCAA Division II semifinals and two of the team’s leading scorers were from the WPIAL. Logan Maloni, a sophomore from Peters Township, finished as the second-leading scorer with 27 goals and 38 assists. Zach Rusch, a senior from Bethel Park, was fourth with 31 goals and 18 assists. Seton Hill lost to Merrimack in the semifinals, 16-9, on May 22.

Oakland Catholic/Swimming

Peyton Kondis was recently named the University of Houston Cougar of the Year for women. Kondis finished her sophomore year at Houston and she was an accomplished swimmer for the Cougars, qualifying for the NCAA Division I championships in the 100-meter breaststroke, 200 individual medley and 200 breaststroke. A former WPIAL champion, Kondis set a Houston record in the 100 breaststroke.
