Norwin/Baseball

J.J. Matijevic is playing minor-league baseball and recently raised his batting average above .300. Matijevic, a graduate of Norwin, is playing for the Quad Cities Bandits, the Houston Astros Class A affiliate in Davenport, Iowa. Matijevic began the week hitting .306 with two home runs and three doubles. He went 4 for 7 in two games last weekend. He was the 75th player taken in last year’s MLB draft out of the University of Arizona.

Hempfield/Track and field

Maddie Holmberg is getting close to being the best heptathlon athlete ever at Penn State. At the Virginia Challenge last weekend, Holmberg won the event with a score of 5,736, which was the second-best in Penn State history. Holmberg, a junior and an outstanding track and field athlete at Hempfield High School, finished seventh at the NCAA pentathlon in March and garnered All-American honors.

Gateway/Tennis

Samantha Memije is having a fine season with the Michigan State women’s tennis team. Memije, a sophomore, is 19-5 overall and has a 9-1 record in Ben Ten Conference play. She has won eight of her past nine matches. Michigan State has a 15-8 record overall and a 6-5 mark in Big Ten Conference play. Memije is a graduate of Gateway High School where she was one of the top-ranked players in the Mid-Atlantic region.
