Soccer, volleyball rankings: Seneca Valley regains No. 1 boys spot

As the regular season ends, there were bound to be a few tweaks to the final Post-Gazette boys soccer rankings before the WPIAL soccer committee meets Wednesday to decide seedings and release the postseason brackets.

That’s what happens when key section rivalries are decided in the final week of the campaign.

Perhaps the biggest change was in Class 4A where Seneca Valley, by virtue of a 2-0 clean sheet against North Allegheny, won the Section 1 title, reclaimed the No. 1 ranking and likely the top seed in the playoffs while flipping the Tigers back into the No. 2 spot. Seneca Valley was ranked No. 1 for much of the season but was bumped from the top a few weeks ago as North Allegheny took over No. 1.

Barring any upsets in a few late non-conference matchups there will be two unbeaten and untied teams heading into the playoffs — Class 2A No. 1 South Park and Class 1A No. 1 Charleroi.

Lola Abraham, the WPIAL girls soccer scoring leader, recorded a hat trick as Riverview High School captured its first section title with Monday's 3-2 victory against host Springdale, in a Class 1A Section 1 finale that featured two ranked teams.
