High school highlights: Allderdice football picks up first win of season, defeats Brashear

With Allderdice win, Westinghouse moves closer to outright City League title

Brashear was the last City League team to play a conference game this year.

As it turns out, Westinghouse couldn’t wait for the Bulls to get underway.

Azerick Jetter stymied three first-half Brashear drives with interceptions and Deondre Hill carried 20 times for 103 yards and two touchdowns to lead Allderdice (1-5, 1-2) to its first win of the season Thursday in a 24-8 victory against Brashear (2-4, 1-1) at Cupples Stadium.

With the Brashear loss, Westinghouse (4-0, 3-0) is guaranteed no worse than a tie for the City League regular season title. The Bulldogs can clinch the outright title and the top seed in the playoffs with either a Brashear loss to University Prep next week or a win against the Bulls in their Oct. 12 meeting.

Westinghouse will play non-conference road games at Hollidaysburg and Butler prior to taking on Brashear.

• Any hope Norwin had of winning the outright Section 4 title may have been thwarted. Ryan Galicic and Eli Krisher each scored goals while Ryan Simonette came through with a clean sheet as Canon-McMillan (6-5-1, 6-3-1) upset the Class 4A No. 5 Knights, 2-0, in their second meeting of the season. With the loss, Norwin (9-3-0, 8-2-0) fell a full game behind Upper St. Clair (11-1-0, 9-1-0), which it lost to earlier in the season.

• North Allegheny (11-0-2, 8-0-2), which moved to No. 1 in Class 4A this week, had no one to blame but itself for its 2-2 tie in a showdown with No. 3 Butler (9-2-2, 6-2-1). The Tigers gave the Golden Tornado an own-goal and Cody Lubinsky notched the second to earn the draw to remain in third place in Section 1.

• When Shady Side Academy and Deer Lakes met for the first time, the Lancers eked out a one-goal win over their Section 2 rivals. Not this time, however, as Drew McKim netted a hat trick and Amir Awais, Santiago Maiz and Mark Bence each chipped in a tally to lead the Class 2A No. 4 Bulldogs (9-1-0, 8-1-0) to a 6-2 blowout of the defending WPIAL champion and No. 3 Lancers (10-2-0, 9-1-0).

• Jacob Higgs scored the only goal of the match and Vir Kamat posted the shutout as Class 4A No. 4 Upper St. Clair (11-1-0, 9-1-0) pulled out a 1-0 victory against rival Mt. Lebanon (5-7-1, 5-4-1) in a key Section 2 tilt. The Blue Devils are now two points behind Peters Township (7-3-0, 6-3-0) for the fourth and final WPIAL postseason spot out of the section.

• Thomas Jefferson (10-1-1, 8-1-1) has drifted under the radar for much of the season, but the team is in the middle of a nice run. The Jaguars extended their unbeaten streak to nine games (8-0-1) as Brayden Miller scored all three goals in a 3-1 victory against Connellsville (5-8-0, 3-7-0) in their Class 3A Section 3 match. Thomas Jefferson is three points behind first-place Bethel Park (10-1-1, 9-0-1).

• Sewickley Academy (9-1-1, 7-1-1) continued its rebound after a loss last week to Eden Christian. The Panthers won their second in a row as Jackson Quigley netted four goals in a 7-1 win against South Side Beaver.

• Jeannette striker Jordan Taylor notched his WPIAL-leading 36th goal of the season, but it wasn’t enough for the Jayhawks (7-5-0, 5-5-0). Mason Nebel netted a hat trick, while Evan Haas and Will Schwalm notched one apiece to lead Knoch (7-7-0, 7-3-0) to the 5-2 Class 2A Section 2 win.

• Trevor Kovatch scored three goals and assisted on the only other Belle Vernon goal as the Leopards (10-2-0, 9-1-0) slipped past Waynesburg (3-9-0, 2-8-0), 4-2, in a Class 2A Section 3 clash.
