Savannah Shaw is going back to the NCAA track championships. Shaw, a senior distance runner at North Carolina State University, qualified for this year’s NCAA 5,000-meter championship by placing third at the NCAA East Regional this past Saturday in Bloomington, Ind. Shaw, a former star runner at Upper St. Clair, ran a personal-best 15 minutes, 33.42 seconds, fourth-best in program history. Shaw made All-American at last year’s championships. She will run in this year’s championships June 8-11 in Eugene, Ore.
CAMERON WESTON
Canon-McMillan/Baseball
The University of Michigan baseball team earned a trip to the NCAA Tournament by winning the Ben Ten Conference tourney, and a pitcher from the WPIAL played a role in the Wolverines’ title run. Cameron Weston, a junior from Canon-McMillan, pitched three games in the conference tourney. He worked seven innings and allowed only two runs. His best outing came against Iowa when he pitched three innings, gave up only two hits and struck out six. He is 4-3 for the season. Michigan plays in the NCAA Tournament Friday.
DRAVON ASKEW-HENRY
Aliquippa/Football
A former Aliquippa player is doing well while playing in the USFL. Dravon Askew-Henry plays defensive back for the New Jersey Generals, who were the first team to clinch a USFL playoff spot this past weekend. Askew-Henry had two interceptions in New Jersey’s most recent game, a victory against Tampa that was the Generals’ sixth consecutive win. For the season, Askew-Henry has 28 tackles. He is a former standout player at Aliquippa who went on to play at West Virginia University.
