MADISON WILTROUT
Connellsville/Track and field
Three invitationals, three titles. That’s the way the track and field season has started for Madison Wiltrout, a former Connellsville star and a graduate student at the University of North Carolina. Wiltrout won the javelin at the Duke Invitational this past Saturday with a meet-record throw of 181 feet, 6 inches. Wiltrout broke her own school record earlier this season with a throw of 184-1, second best in NCAA Division I this season. Wiltrout set a national high school record at Connellsville.
MIA EDWARDS
Shenango/Softball
Mia Edwards is in her first season with the Colgate softball team, and she already has her name in the school’s record book. On April 5, Edwards, a freshman pitcher from Shenango High School, set a Colgate record when she had 16 strikeouts in an 8-0 victory against Binghamton. That broke Colgate’s single-game record of 14, set 38 years ago. Edwards, a Post-Gazette All-Area selection last year, started this week with a 2-5 record and 43 strikeouts in 46.2 innings.
TRENT VIETMEIER
Montour/Baseball
This is Trent Vietmeier’s fifth season with the Louisiana State baseball team, and he’s off to his best start. Vietmeier, a former standout at Montour, is a relief pitcher for LSU. He entered this week with a 1.06 ERA and a 1-0 record. Vietmeier had pitched 17 innings in 11 games and allowed only two earned runs. He had 25 strikeouts and opponents were batting only .153 against him with only nine hits. Vietmeier has never finished a season with an ERA better than 3.38.
