Darius Bruce didn’t wait long to make an impact on the IUP football team. Bruce was the City League Player of the Year last season at Westinghouse High School. He’s now a freshman defensive back at IUP and is the third-leading tackler on the team with 29 for the Crimson Hawks, who are 5-1 overall and 4-0 in the PSAC. Bruce had five tackles and broke up two passes as IUP knocked off previously undefeated Slippery Rock, 48-21, on Saturday.

Coach BIlly Cook guided the New Castle baseball team to its first WPIAL and PIAA titles in 2021 and was selected the PIAA coach of the year.

Moon/Soccer

Delaney Snyder was the Gatorade Pennsylvania Player of the Year in soccer as a senior at Moon High School four years ago. She is now doing good things for the University of Louisville Cardinals. Snyder is tied for second on the team in goals with three. Snyder, a graduate of Moon who also was the Post-Gazette Player of the Year in 2017, has helped Louisville to a 7-5-1 record. The Cardinals have a 3-4 mark in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

South Fayette/Football

Drew Saxton is among the top passers in the country in NCAA Division III football. Saxton, a South Fayette graduate who plays for Case Western University, is No. 10 in passing yardage with 315.67 a game. In six games, he has completed 152 of 260 for 1,894 yards. Case Western has a 3-3 record. Saxton is a senior who has 7,893 career passing yards and 74 touchdown passes. Saxton is the seventh-leading passer in WPIAL history with 7,452 yards.
