Former Pine-Richland star Troy LaNeve is taking advantage of more playing time lately for one of the top college baseball teams in the country. LaNeve, a sophomore outfielder at Vanderbilt University, was 2 for 4 with one home run and 3 RBIs against Kentucky last Friday. A day earlier, he hit a “walk off” two-run homer in a 4-2 victory against Kentucky. In 24 games, LaNeve is hitting .390 with 5 home runs and 15 RBIs. Vanderbilt, ranked No. 3 in the country, has a 39-13 record.
MACKENNA ORIE
Hempfield/Track and field
The Big East Conference track and field championships were held recently, and Hempfield High School graduate Mackenna Orie was named the conference’s Most Outstanding Field Performer. Orie, a sophomore at DePaul University, won the conference title in the shot put and also finished second in the discus. She is a former WPIAL champion in both events. Orie will compete in the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds this weekend at Texas A&M.
SCOTT BENCO
Waynesburg/Track and field
Scott Benco is a redshirt freshman at Kent State and he recently won the Mid-American Conference javelin championship. Benco, a Waynesburg graduate, won with a throw of 216 feet, 10 inches, more than 13 feet better than the second-place finisher. He was one of two former WPIAL athletes at Kent State who won titles. Anthony Milliner, a junior from New Brighton, won the triple jump. Both Benco and Milliner will compete in the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds this weekend at North Florida.
