High school basketball highlights: Washington edges Charleroi

A Class 3A Section 4 showdown Friday night between Washington and Charleroi might have been the best of the night on paper. And in reality, it might have been even better than advertised.

The teams entered the meeting tied atop the section standings with identical 5-1 records and finished regulation tied, 43-43. One extra period wasn’t enough time to settle things, but in double overtime, Brandon Patterson converted a free throw with 1.2 seconds left for a 52-51 road win for the Little Prexies (7-6, 6-1).

Zach Usher led all scorers with 19 points for the Cougars (8-7, 5-2). Patterson had 12 points for Washington while Dan Ethridge led with 13 in the win.
