Annalyse Bauer did something on Tuesday night that only three other players in the WPIAL have been able to accomplish.
She scored a goal against Mars.
Unfortunately for Latrobe, it wasn’t enough.
Ainsley Ray, Piper Coffield and Lily Wolf scored first-half goals and the Mars defense tightened up down the stretch as the top-seeded Planets (17-0-0) extended their unbeaten streak to 80 games with a 4-1 victory against the No. 5 Wildcats (12-3-2) in the WPIAL Class 3A girls soccer semifinals at Gateway.
“It was nice to finally play a team that sort of opened up a little bit,” Mars coach Blair Gerlach said. “They’re a pretty young team and they’re built going forward.”
Mars is 78-0-2 with 60 shutouts during its run, will play in the finals for the sixth consecutive season and will be looking for its fourth consecutive title.
Other Class 3A girls
Moon 3, Plum 0: The Tigers (19-0-0), who are the reigning WPIAL and PIAA Class 4A champions, will play in a championship game for the second consecutive season as Sydney Felton scored the only goal they needed just 22 seconds into the match to end the title hopes for the Mustangs (16-2-0).
Class 2A girls
Mount Pleasant 1, South Park 0 (OT): Riley Gesinski scored on a set play off a corner kick from Rylin Bugosh for the only goal of the game to knock off the No. 3 Eagles and send the second-seeded Vikings to the finals for the first time.
Avonworth 2, North Catholic 1: Simone Sharpless scored the opening goal for the Trojanettes (15-2-0) and it appeared it might hold up. But the defending champion and fifth-seeded Antelopes (18-3-0) scored two second-half goals, including the game-winner from Caroline Sweeney, to upset the No. 1 seed.
Class 4A boys
Pine-Richland 1, Butler 0: Colin Zvejnieks scored the only goal with five minutes remaining in the first half to send the No. 6 Rams (14-4-1) to the win against the seventh-seeded Golden Tornado (13-5-2) and into the finals for the first time in school history.
Seneca Valley 3, Fox Chapel 2: Will Bruno, Max Marcotte and Beaux Lizewski scored to stake the top-seeded Raiders to a 3-0 lead, but the Foxes rallied with two late goals and nearly sent it to overtime before the two-time defending champions closed it out.
Class 1A boys
Winchester Thurston 4, Sewickley Academy 3 (OT): Alex Hauskrecht had two goals and Tomer Tuti capped it off with the game-winner with five minutes remaining in the first overtime to lead the defending WPIAL and PIAA champion Bears (15-2-1) back to the title match with the win against the Panthers (16-3-0).
Charleroi 1, Eden Christian 0: Arlo McIntyre scored the only goal of the match early in the first half to lead the No. 8 Cougars (17-2-0).
