Four WPIAL football championships will return to broadcast television this year, thanks to the Steelers.
The team announced Tuesday that it has partnered with 84 Lumber, Acrisure and Giant Eagle to show the Class 1A, 2A, 3A and 4A championships on KDKA+ Nov. 24 at Acrisure Stadium.
Last year was the first time in 30-plus years that no championship games were on broadcast television. From 1987 through 2021, at least one title game was televised live, and four games were aired in most seasons. Over the years, some games where shown on tape because of Penguin telecasts.
KDKA had been televising championship games since 2018 on sister station WPCW, with a few simulcast on KDKA. WPCW is now KDKA+. Before KDKA, some other stations televised the games.
But KDKA decided last year to stop televising the games, mainly because of costs. The Tribune Review High School Sports Network live streamed the games on the internet last year, but the Tribune Review’s deal with the WPIAL was up this year.
Some WPIAL playoff games this year are live streamed on the NFHS Network, but a subscription is required for those games.
Times for the games on KDKA+ Nov. 24 are 11 a.m. (Class 1A), 2 p.m. (Class 2A), 5 p.m. (Class 3A), 8 p.m. (Class 4A).
