Clairton (3-2, 3-0), which ranks No. 1 in the WPIAL’s Class 1A, got a big, 28-18, win against No. 3 ranked Bishop Canevin (5-1, 2-1) at home. It was Bishop Canevin’s first loss of the season.
Bishop Canevin was known for its defense heading into this game, as they were the top scoring defense in all of Class 1A, allowing only 32 points in five games. But it was Clairton which displayed a vaunted defensive performance, scoring two touchdowns off of fumble recoveries.
Keire Dixon got things started for Clairton by recovering a fumble in the end zone for a touchdown in the first quarter. And then, later in the first quarter, Bishop Canevin had a bad snap that went into the end zone, resulting in a safety for Clairton.
Running back Christian Wade rushed for a 5-yard score in the second quarter and defensive tackle Kanye’ Hawkins recovered a fumble and returned it 25 yards for a touchdown to give Clairton a 22-0 lead at halftime.
Shenango 28, Burgettstown 6: Shenango (1-4, 1-2) went on the road and got their first win of the year by rolling past Burgettstown (2-3, 0-3). Burgettstown got on the scoreboard first with a 1-yard touchdown run by Caleb Russell, but it was all Shenango after that. Shenango running back CJ Miller was the standout performer for the Wildcats, as he rushed for 103 yards on 22 carries and three touchdowns.
West Greene 41, Carmichaels 20: West Greene (4-2, 3-0) pulled off a big conference win against Carmichaels (4-2, 2-1) at home. West Greene and Carmichels were tied for first in the Tri-County South heading into tonight’s game along with Monessen. Carmicheals ranked second in Class 1A in scoring at 40 points per game prior to playing West Greene.
Mapletown 15, Monessen 8: Mapletown (3-3, 1-2) got its first conference win of the year by beating Monessen (3-3, 1-1) in a close one on the road. Mapletown led 15-8 at halftime. Mapletown got on the board first with a Max Vanata 7-yard touchdown pass to Brody Evans in the first quarter. Monessen answered on the following drive with a 80-yard touchdown run by Daevon Burke. Landan Stevenson, who rushed for 112 yards on 29 carries for Mapletown, scored a 26-yard touchdown in the second quarter.
Leechburg 53, Jeannette 7: The victory moves Leechburg (5-1, 2-1) closer to making the WPIAL playoffs for the first time since 1988. Leechburg’s Thomas Burke was efficient against Jeannette (1-5, 1-2), completing 11 of 14 passes for 202 yards and three touchdowns.
Riverview 42, Imani Christian Academy 14: Riverview (1-4, 1-2) pulled off an upset on the road against Imani Christian Academy (2-3, 1-2), winning its first game of the year. Riverview pulled away in the second half after scoring 20 points in the fourth quarter.
Class 2A
Carlynton 6, Brentwood 0: Carlynton (2-4, 1-0) displayed an impressive defensive and shut out Brentwood (1-5, 0-1) on the road. The only score of the game came from Carlynton running back Devonte Dean, who rushed for a 7-yard touchdown with 27 seconds remaining in the second quarter.
Chartiers-Houston 27, Charleroi 10: : Chartiers-Houston (4-1, 2-1) routed Charleroi (1-4, 1-2) on the road for its second conference win of the season. Chartiers-Houston outgained Charleroi 322-91 in total offense, and 104 of those yards for Chartiers-Houston came via running back Lane Camden on 11 carries. Camden also scored three rushing touchdowns.
Waynesburg 28, Frazier 7: Waynesburg (2-4, 1-2) won comfortably on the road against Frazier (0-6, 0-2), securing their first conference win of the season and second overall. Waynesburg racked up 269 yards on 43 carries, an average of 6.3 yards per carry, and four touchdowns. Two of those touchdowns came from running back Braydon Woods.
Neshannock 58, Elwood City 14: Neshanock (5-1, 2-1) rolled against Ellwood City (0-4, 0-2) on the road. Neshanock led 39-0 at halftime and never looked back. The Lancers compiled 217 yards on the ground and had five rushing touchdowns. Neshannock’s leading rusher was Peyton Weaver, who rushed for 72 yards on eight carries.
Apollo Ridge 41, Summit Academy 22: Apollo Ridge (2-3, 1-0), bested Summit Academy (0-6, 0-1) on the road in its first conference game of the season. Apollo Ridge got out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter and then piled on 21 points in the second quarter.
Mohawk 37, Riverside 0: Mohawk (4-2, 3-0 remains undefeated in conference play, as it routed Riverside (0-5, 0-3) on the road. Mohawk led 15-0 at halftime and continued to pour it on in the second half. Mohawk running back Maddox Truschel had a standout performance, as he rushed for 150 yards on 27 carries and two touchdowns.
