The Brashear High School football team has been shut down for two weeks because a player tested positive for COVID-19. But the team will still get a shot at a City League championship because Pittsburgh Public Schools has pushed back the playoffs to allow Brashear to compete.
The Brashear player who tested positive was last with the team Tuesday and wore “the required personal protective equipment the entire time,” according to a release Friday from Pittsburgh Public Schools. The player did not attend Brashear’s game against University Prep on Thursday, and the school shut down for 14 days Friday.
The top four teams in the City League qualify for the semifinals, which were scheduled for Oct. 29-30. Brashear, which lost to University Prep, 20-6, finished the regular season as the fourth-place team and was scheduled to play first-place Westinghouse on Oct. 30. Allderdice was supposed to play University Prep in the other semifinal Oct. 29.
But the City League has moved those games Nov. 7 at Cupples Stadium on the South Side at a time to be determined. The City League championship and consolation games will now be played Nov. 14 at Cupples Stadium.
The delay won’t affect the PIAA playoffs because the City League has elected not to participate in the PIAA playoffs this season.
