High school football rankings: Springdale Dynamos charge to Class 1A top five

The team that has Reddy Kilowatt as its mascot has been lighting up the scoreboard so far this season. And now Springdale should get a charge at appearing in the Post-Gazette rankings for the first time.

The Springdale Dynamos moved into the No. 5 spot in this week’s WPIAL Class 1A rankings. Springdale is 4-0 and coach Seth Napierkowski’s team has scored more than 40 points in all four games.

Springdale is averaging 42 points and has a big game Friday against Jeannette.

But back to Springdale’s mascot. Reddy Kilowatt is a cartoon character that some electric utilities have used as a corporate symbol over the years. While Reddy Kilowatt could be considered a character of legendary proportions, Springdale has a real Legend on its team. The team’s quarterback is Legend Ausk, who is having a nice season after missing almost all of 2019 because of a broken collarbone.

Ryan Matsook has guided Western Beaver to a 4-0 start in his first season as coach, but he won WPIAL and PIAA titles as Beaver Falls' coach in 2016.

Elsewhere in the rankings, Canon-McMillan moved up to No. 3 in Class 6A, the Big Macs’ highest ranking since 2004. Canon-McMillan moved up a spot after Seneca Valley, previously ranked No. 2, lost to Central Catholic. Canon-McMillan has a big game Friday against Seneca Valley.

In Class 2A, Western Beaver is in the top five for the first time this season.

Here are this week’s rankings for the WPIAL, City League and state:
