The WPIAL has changed the site of a football championship and also the date of another title game.
The Class 2A title game will be played Saturday, Nov. 23 at Norwin High School at noon. It was originally scheduled for Robert Morris University, but a scheduling mixup forced the WPIAL to move the game; Robert Morris’ team has a game that day.
“Robert Morris assumed it was the Saturday after Thanksgiving like it was last year,” said Amy Scheuneman, associate executive director of WPIAL. “But Thanksgiving is late this year, so the game was scheduled for the Saturday before Thanksgiving. When we went to confirm the date, it was realized Robert Morris had a home football game that day.”
Meanwhile, the Class 5A title game has been switched to Nov. 23, 6 p.m. at Norwin. The contest was supposed to be Nov. 22 at Norwin, but when the Class 2A game was moved to Norwin, the WPIAL decided to schedule both games on the same day at the same place. Norwin’s stadium will be cleared after the first game and separate tickets will be sold for the two games.
“We’re anticipating that they will be televised, and it would be an easier set-up for the TV crew if both games were on the same day at the same site,” Scheuneman said.
A year ago, all six title games were televised live on either KDKA or WPCW.
The other four championship games this year in Class 6A, 4A, 3A and 1A are still set for Nov. 16 at Heinz Field.
The WPIAL playoffs begin Nov. 1. Class 6A will have a six-team bracket while Class 5A and 2A will have 16-team fields. The Class 4A, 3A and 1A brackets will have eight teams in the playoffs.
