Remembering some past WPIAL football championship moments

Class 1A

2007

Jeannette was one of the highest-scoring teams in WPIAL history and the Jayhawks won a championship at Heinz Field with a 61-12 victory against Beaver Falls. It was only three points shy of the championship game record for scoring, set by Bridgeville with 64 in 1949. Jeannette star quarterback Terrelle Pryor ran for 166 yards on 12 carries and also completed 5 of 6 passes for 81 yards.

2003

Jeannette got two safeties and took a 4-0 lead in the first half against Aliquippa in the title game at Heinz Field. But the Quips came on strong to win, 18-4. Future NFL star Darrelle Revis played running back for Aliquippa and rushed for 67 yards on 11 carries. He also caught one pass and it went 54 yards for a touchdown.

Class 2A

1995

The championship went to overtime at Three Rivers Stadium before Burrell pulled out a 14-13 victory against Washington. The game was tied, 7-7, after regulation. Burrell got the ball first in overtime and got a 3-yard touchdown run from John Horwatt. The Bucs also were successful on the extra-point kick. On its overtime possession. Washington got a 4-yard touchdown run from Eugene Woods. Coach Guy Montecalvo elected to go for the win with a two-point conversion. Quarterback Ken Carl ran an option play and pitched to Aaron Gatten, who was stopped just short of the goal line.

1989

Steel Valley won its second consecutive WPIAL title with a 20-14 victory against Freeport at Three Rivers Stadium. Freeport took the lead in the fourth quarter on Ryan Redmond’s 25-yard run. But Steel Valley quarterback Marcel Weems scored on a 1-yard touchdown run later in the fourth quarter to give the Ironmen the win. Steel Valley did not win another championship until 2016.
