Jeannette moves up in state football rankings

Jeannette opened the season by stepping up in class, and a victory moved the Jayhawks one step higher in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette state rankings.

Jeannette is a WPIAL Class 1A school that defeated 2A East Allegheny, 28-26, on Friday night. East Allegheny was the Post-Gazette’s No. 4-ranked team in WPIAL Class 2A. After the win, Jeannette moved from fourth to third in the Post-Gazette state rankings for Class 1A.

Robert Kennedy was the star for Jeannette against East Allegheny, throwing for 134 yards, also rushing for 134 and breaking up a two-point conversion pass that would’ve tied the game.

Jeannette remained at No. 2 in the WPIAL ranking. Imani Christian moved into the WPIAL top five in Class 1A at No. 4 while Our Lady of the Sacred Heart dropped out of the top five after losing to South Side Beaver.

Aidan Cain, seen catching a pass in a Mt. Lebanon summer workout, has come back from two ACL injuries.

There was little movement elsewhere in the rankings. Many teams did not play in Week Zero and will play their first game this weekend. Central Catholic dropped out of the top five in the state rankings and fell from No. 2 to No. 3 in the WPIAL rankings after losing to Erie Cathedral Prep, 40-7.

A big game in Eastern Pennsylvania Saturday saw Harrisburg defeat Imhotep Charter, 33-14. Harrisburg entered the contest No. 2 in 5A while Imhotep was No. 2 in 4A.

Here are the Post-Gazette rankings:
