A win and they’re in.
That’s all Woodland Hills (10-11, 5-8) needs after a 53-51 upset victory against Seneca Valley (11-10, 8-5) in Class 6A Section 1 play on Tuesday night. The team’s motto of taking it one game at a time is working, if the three-game winning streak is any indication.
The next challenge is North Hills (7-14, 6-7) on Friday. If Woodland Hills wins, the Wolverines will head to the playoffs.
“It really was a great win,” Woodland Hills coach Steve Scorpion said. “It kept our season alive and kept our chances to make the playoffs alive. This is how our section has been this whole year. You get a big win, but you can’t get too excited, because now we have to go to North Hills, on the road.”
In the closing seconds against the Raiders, Wolverines sophomore forward Donshae Mosley scored the game-winning baskets against Seneca Valley, going two for two at the free-throw line with two seconds left in regulation. After the foul shots, junior guard Scoop Smith ended up stealing the ball on Seneca’s possession to finish the game. Smith had 11 points for Woodland Hills, while Mosley led the team with 17.
“I’m really happy for Mose, because he’s only a tenth grader, and he’s still learning,” Scorpion said. “He’s a football player, so we didn’t have any offseason or fall league with him. We didn’t really know what we were going to get from him. He’s a great kid, extremely coachable and he’s continued to work. He’s just scratching the surface of how good he can be. For him to step up and make those free throws, that was big for him.
“Scoop got the steal, but there were [two or three] of our guys that tipped the ball, and, go figure, Scoop comes up with it,” Scorpion added. “That’s how he is.”
Seneca Valley junior Owen Congdon led with 18.
Woodland Hills will go on the road to face North Hills — who won 59-35 against North Allegheny on Tuesday night — on Friday, with tip-off slated for 7:30 p.m.
“We’re excited to stay in the playoff race, but our focus is now on North Hills,” Scorpion said. “They’re really good, and they play really hard. It’s going to be a tough one.”
