Girls basketball rankings: Three new No. 1 teams

Peters Township, Blackhawk, Union all take over top spots in three classifications

At some point, it’s likely Peters Township and South Fayette could meet this season.

But it won’t be in the regular season.

Even though the two schools play in the same classification and are only 11 miles apart, they are not in the same section and did not schedule each other for an exhibition game. That means the debate will rage throughout the year about which team is the top in the classification. Is it Peters Townwhip, which dropped down from Class 6A and has perhaps the top player in the WPIAL in Miami recruit Natalie Wetzel? Or is it South Fayette, which has Division I prospect Juliette Leroux?

So, let’s start the debate now.

South Fayette came into the season as the three-time defending WPIAL champion, the No. 1 team in Class 5A and is unbeaten through four games. But the Lions still dropped a spot in the rankings this week as Peters Township, also 4-0 and by virtue of a blowout upset victory against Class 6A No. 1 Upper St. Clair, leapfrogged the Lions for the top spot.

While the Peters Township win put the Indians atop Class 5A, the Panthers remained atop Class 6A this week despite the loss. Though the top two spots stayed the same, the next three spots shuffled as newcomers Hempfield and Woodland Hills slipped into the top five for the first time this season.

There are also a new pair of No. 1s, as defending state champion Blackhawk replaced winless North Catholic in Class 4A and Union moved past Serra Catholic in Class 1A.
