State basketball rankings: Penn Hills cracks the top 10

The Penn Hills boys basketball team is unbeaten against Class 5A competition this season. The success has enabled the Indians to earn a spot in the state rankings.

Penn Hills is ranked No. 10 in Class 5A. This is the first time the Indians have appeared in the state rankings, which are compiled by Mike Bullock and the Sunbury Daily Item. Penn Hills won the WPIAL Class 6A title last season, but dropped down to 5A this season. Penn Hills is 16-3, with losses to three 6A teams - Latrobe, North Allegheny and Chester (near Philadelphia). 

Penn Hills is 9-0 in Class 5A Section 1, with three games to play. The Indians have a two-game lead on Woodland Hills, which is 9-2. Penn Hills finishes the season by playing McKeesport Tuesday, Woodland Hills Friday and Albert Gallatin Saturday.

Elsewhere in the rankings, Upper St. Clair dropped out of the top 10 in Class 6A while Pine-Richland moved up a spot to No. 5. Moon lost for the first time this season last Friday, but Moon dropped only spot in Class 5A, from No 2 to 3. Mars remained No. 1 in 5A.

Woodland Hills' Keandre Bowles scored 32 points and had 12 rebounds to fuel a huge rally as his team stormed back for a win against Hempfield.
