High school basketball highlights: Woodland Hills earns first section crown since 2012

Woodland Hills traditionally has had problems in its rivalry with Penn Hills.

For the most part, it has been a one-sided affair with the Indians holding more than a 2-to-1 advantage over the Wolverines.

None of that mattered Tuesday. It was just Woodland Hills’ time.

Amante Britt scored a game-high 27 points and Keandre Bowles added in 20 and pulled in 12 rebounds for good measure as the Wolverines (18-3, 11-2) pulled out a 66-56 home win against Class 6A No. 4-ranked Penn Hills (18-3, 10-3) to capture at least a share of the Section 3 title, its first section crown since 2012.

Central Catholic students celebrate as their team takes the lead against Butler in the fourth quarter of the teams’ Class 6A showdown at Central Catholic High School. The Vikings went on to win, 61-54, to claim the Section 1 title.

“It’s big for our program because the kids who have been playing in this program have been working hard year after year,” Woodland Hills coach Odell Miller said. “We went to the [WPIAL] semis last year and we’re trying to make a run and, anytime you can beat one of the top three teams in our section is big.”

Woodland Hills can clinch the section outright with a victory Friday against Penn-Trafford.
