Post-Gazette basketball rankings: Union jumps to No. 1; Chartiers Valley moves up

The Union High School boys basketball team knocked off the No. 1-ranked team in WPIAL Class 1A last week, and then played leapfrog in the rankings.

Union is the Post-Gazette’s new No. 1-ranked team in Class 1A. The Scotties had an impressive win Friday when it went on the road and knocked of Cornell, 61-55. Cornell was previously ranked No. 1.

Union, a small school in New Castle, was ranked No. 4 in the rankings before the Cornell game, but the win allowed the Scotties to move ahead of Cornell, Vincentian and Monessen. Union has a 4-2 record and is on a four-game winning streak. Union plays Ellwood City on Thursday night in the Neshannock Tournament.

Elsewhere in the boys rankings, there was little change from last week. Chartiers Valley moved up a spot to No. 4 in Class 5A. The Colts were unranked in the preseason for the first time since coach Tim McConnell became coach in 1993. Chartiers Valley is 4-3, and two of the losses were in a recent tournament in Florida. This is the first team in McConnell’s tenure that doesn’t have a senior.

Darrell Mason (3) of Penn Hills grimaces as he jumps into the arm of Kyzer Cleckley (32) of Beaver Falls in a game last Friday at the C.J. Betters Tournament at the Community College of Beaver County. Penn Hills is now ranked No. 8 in the state in Class 6A.

In the girls rankings, Upper St. Clair moved into the top five in Class 6A for the first time with a 4-1 record. By the way, Upper St. Clair is coached by McConnell’s brother-in-law, Pete Serio. Upper St. Clair has already won more games this season than it did all of last season when it went 3-19.

Also, Latrobe has moved up to No. 3 in the Class 6A girls rankings. The WIldcats were 8-14 last season.
