Hempfield's Morgan Ryan named Pennsylvania softball player of year

Hempfield High School senior softball player Morgan Ryan was part of a team that won its third consecutive WPIAL title last week. Now she gets a big individual accolade.

Ryan has been named the Gatorade Pensylvania Player of the Year. A Notre Dame recruit, Ryan is a standout pitcher who also is one of the Spartans’ best hitters. She has helped Hempfield win 37 consecutive games, dating back to last season.

For the season, Ryan is 18-0 with a 0.94 ERA, and has struck out 169 in 110 innings. She also is batting better than .450. For her career, Ryan has 70 victories and she was the Post-Gazette Player of the Year as a sophomore and junior.

Ryan’s selection as Gatorade player of the year means the WPIAL swept the baseball and softball awards this year. Last week, Latrobe’s Zach Kokoska was selected Pennsylvania baseball player of the year.

Hempfield softball coach Bob Kalp congratulates his team and awards them with medals after winning the WPIAL Class 6A softball championships Wednesday at Lilley Field in California, Pa.
