Post-Gazette Athletes of the Week: Anthony Milliner and Sophia Klaber

Post-Gazette Athletes of the Week: Anthony Milliner and Sophia Klaber

Anthony Milliner, New Brighton

Last week: Milliner won the Class AA triple jump at the PIAA track and field championships at Shippensburg University.

Check this out: Milliner became only the third New Brighton boy to win a PIAA championship. The others were Mike Phillips in the 1995 3,200 and Josh McFrazier in the 2010 110 hurdles. A 6-foot-2, 165-pound junior, Milliner is the two-time WPIAL champ in the triple jump and also competes in the long jump. In the fall, he runs cross country for New Brighton. He also has been a starter on the New Brighton basketball team the past two seasons.

Why do you run cross country? It’s a love-hate relationship. I hate running distances, but the way it makes you feel when you’re done. You’re like, ’Wow, I just ran six miles without stopping. How many people can say that?’

But do you realize not many jumpers in track run cross country? My track coach makes fun of me sometimes [laugh]. She came to one of our cross country meets and I’m getting passed up by girls, short people, real skinny people. She just laughed at me.

You play basketball, but is your future in track and field? Yes, sir. Our basketball team has really never went anywhere and I’m not an extraordinary player that would get any looks from colleges. Track is different.

You ever wonder who invented the triple jump? It is odd and I don’t know where someone came up with the form. I don’t want to say I was a natural at it, but I did track in middle school and kind of tinkered with the triple jump. Then when I came up to high school, coach started showing me some different stuff with it.

Will you have a job this summer? I worked last summer at the Back Door Tavern [in New Brighton]. Maybe I’ll go back there.

Wait, a tavern? What did you do? A busboy, swept tables. It was a good experience because it was my first job. I already had a sense of responsibility, but that taught me more. Plus, they have the best wings around, I’m telling you. Probably the best fries, too. You get a chance, stop up,

People might be surprised to know? I used to have no friends.

When? In middle school. I was a loner. But ever since high school, I’m like a butterfly. I’m all over the place.

Sophia Klaber, Mt. Lebanon

Last week: Klaber, a senior midfielder, scored four goals in the WPIAL Division 1 final to help the Blue Devils beat Section 1 rival Chartiers Valley, 14-9, for their second title in three years and fifth overall.

Check this out: For the second year in a row, Klaber is an All-WPIAL Division 1 selection. She scored her 100th goal this season and has 106 for her career, plus 84 assists. Her younger sister, Ally, is a sophomore on the team and added two goals of her own in the title game. Sophia also was a four-year varsity basketball player and part-time starter as a guard.

College talk: Klaber will continue her lacrosse career next season in the Patriot League at Bucknell University, where she plans to enroll in the School of Management.

So you’re studying management at Bucknell, is that what you hope to do? I think as of now I have a real interest in international business, that side of things. I’m fluent in French, because my mom is from Belgium, so I would love to incorporate that in my career at some point.

You’re the second Athlete of the Week from Mt. Lebanon this spring after baseball player Eddie Jenkins. Do you know him at all? Oh yeah, he’s great. Awesome athlete, super nice kid, he’s great. Nothing but good things to say about him.

Are you wrapped up in Stanley Cup fever? I’m a huge Penguins fan. Actually, they did a ‘lip dub’ contest for high schools, and we didn’t win, but they raffled off tickets and I got to go to Game 4 of the Capitals series at home. It went into overtime and they won, so that was awesome.

The best thing about living in Pittsburgh is ... ? I think it has to be Downtown and the atmosphere with all the sports. Pirates games, football games, Steelers, Pens, there’s always something going on and they always say we’re the ‘City of Champions.’

What’s your go-to meal if you have to cook? I love breakfast foods, so I’d probably make myself eggs and toast, bacon, something like that.

If you could hang out with one celebrity for a day, who would it be? Let’s go with Beyonce.
