Duquesne's leading scorer, Marcus Weathers, stepped into the transfer portal on Tuesday. The Kansas native joins his brother Mike Weathers, a senior guard at Texas Southern University, seeking a transfer.
Marcus confirmed to Pittsburgh Sports Now that he wanted to reunite with his brother. The pair played together at Miami (Ohio) University before Marcus transferred to Duquesne in 2018.
Head coach Keith Dambrot hoped Weathers would take advantage of an extra year of eligibility with the Dukes. Instead, the senior forward follows Sincere Carry, Larry Norman Jr, transferring from the team this season. Mike Hughes also left the Dukes to pursue a pro basketball career.
Weathers averaged 15.3 and 7.7 rebounds per game in 2020-21. He made the All Atlantic-10 Second Team this season and last year.
Look for recent transfer center Tre Williams and forward R.J. Gunn to fill the gaps left by Weathers and Hughes departures. Williams averaged nine points and six rebounds for Indiana State this season. The 6-foot-7, 250-pound center shot 53.2% from the field.
Gunn played at Division II Lenoir-Rhyne in Hickory, N.C, for the last four seasons. He's 6-foot-7, 245 pounds, and averaged 16.6 points a game with 5.3 rebounds in 2020-21.
The Dukes also recently signed prep guard Primo Spears. The 6-foot-2 averaged 21 points, seven rebounds, and four assists for Mt. Zion Prep School in Lanham, Md. Getting Spears allows Dambrot to move senior Tavian Dunn-Martin back to shooting guard. Dunn-Martin switched over to point guard when Carry left the team during the season.
All told, the Dukes' head into next season minus four of their five starters from this year with Weathers, Hughes, Carry, and Norman Jr leaving.
