Duquesne men's basketball finalizes 2017 recruiting class

The three commitments in Duquesne’s 2017 recruiting class are now official.

Coach Jim Ferry announced this afternoon the signings of Lewis Djonkam, John Walker and Jamari Wheeler, three high school seniors he said are “versatile basketball players who are all quality kids with the ability to compete in the Atlantic 10.”

Djonkam, a 6-foot-8, 230-pound post player from Springfield, Va., is spending a post-graduate season playing for Hargrave Military Academy.

“Lewis is one of those old-school, throwback low-post players,” Ferry said in a statement. “He’s physical, he’s tough. He’s a big guy who wants to be a big guy. He competes and takes great pride in rebounding the basketball. I think he’ll be able to step in physically as a freshman and help the program.”

Walker, a 6-8 forward from Thurgood Marshall High School in Missouri City, Texas, is considered a three-star recruit.

“John is a really intriguing, really skilled forward,” Ferry said. “You can play him on the wing, you can play him [at power forward]. He can pass, dribble and shoot and just has a great feel for the game. He was a guard his whole life before he had a late growing spurt. He’s almost 6-9 now, and I think his best basketball is ahead of him.”

Last to sign was Wheeler, a 6-foot guard out of The Rock School in Live Oak, Fla., where he averaged 13.1 points per game last season.

“Jamari is a true point guard with a real feel for the game,” Ferry said. “He is a tenacious defender who can also shoot the 3. He has the ability to break people down and to top it off, he has a fantastic personality, as do all three signees.”
