Pitt football announced Tuesday it would open its 2025 season at Acrisure Stadium against Duquesne on Saturday, Aug. 30.
It will be the first time in 86 years Pitt and Duquesne have faced off. The most recent matchup was a 21-13 Duquesne victory on Oct. 21, 1939. Pitt leads the series 4-2, with victories in 1938, 1937, 1933 and 1932.
The kickoff time is yet to be announced, but it confirms Pitt’s full slate of nonconference regular season opponents. Pitt is already scheduled to play Central Michigan at Acrisure Stadium on Sept. 6, as well as at West Virginia on Sept. 13. The program is also slated to face Notre Dame but without a date set for the game.
Pitt finished 4-0 against nonconference regular season opponents in 2024 as part of the Panthers’ 7-6 season. It was the first season in program history that Pitt football finished with an undefeated nonconference regular season schedule. The Panthers won their first seven games of the season before they lost six consecutive games to close out the year — including a six-overtime loss to Toledo in the GameAbove Sports Bowl. Pitt finished 3-5 in the ACC, the second consecutive year — and third time in Pat Narduzzi’s 10 seasons as head coach — Pitt finished with a losing record against conference opponents.
Duquesne finished 8-3 last season, with a 5-1 record in the Northeast Conference as co-conference champions with Central Connecticut. The Dukes lost to Central Connecticut 21-14 in their season finale. It was the seventh time under Jerry Schmitt that the Dukes have won the Northeast Conference and the 10th conference championship of his tenure since he was hired in 2005.
