Pitt basketball added veteran depth at guard to its roster Friday afternoon.
A source confirmed to the Post-Gazette that Michael Hueitt Jr., a guard from Fayetteville, N.C., has transferred to Pitt, filling one of the Panthers’ final two open scholarship spots left on the team.
Hueitt played most recently with UNC-Greensboro in the 2019-2020 season as a junior, when he averaged 5.8 points per game, shooting 38.1% from the floor and 36.1% on 3-pointers coming off the bench in 30 games for the Spartans.
The 6-foot-3 guard missed the last three seasons and chooses to join Pitt in his final year of NCAA eligibility. Prior to playing for UNC-Greensboro, Hueitt played as a true freshman at Old Dominion, where he averaged 2.1 points per game across 13 game appearances.
Hueitt won’t push for starting time on the Panthers’ roster, but he brings veteran experience of Division I NCAA basketball to a Pitt roster that will include five true freshmen. Two of those freshmen are four-star guards Jaland Lowe and Carlton Carrington, who could project to be the top options to run Pitt’s backcourt for the season after the departure of Dior Johnson.
If Hueitt can bring an outside shooting presence off the bench for the Panthers, that might be his best ticket to more playing time. Four of the Panthers’ top five scorers from beyond the arc graduated at the end of last season, a year in which the Panthers’ 264 made-3-pointers set a program record.
