After a successful first season managing Class AA Altoona, Joey Cora has been promoted to the Pirates major league staff and will serve as the team’s third-base coach, according to a report.
Cora will take over in the third-base coach’s box for Rick Sofield, who was fired last week.
The Pirates have not announced the move. The Altoona Mirror first reported the move.
Cora, 51, played in the majors for 11 seasons before becoming a coach. He won a World Series ring as third-base coach for the Chicago White Sox under manager Ozzie Guillen in 2005. Cora followed Guillen to the Miami Marlins after the 2011 season and spent one season there.
Cora joined the Pirates organization last December, taking over as Altoona manager. The Curve went 76-64 this season before falling to Class AA Akron in the Eastern League Division Series.
