Pittsburgh women's soccer attains history, to face Notre Dame in ACC tourney

The No. 19-ranked Pitt women's soccer team made program history Thursday at Ambrose Urbanic Field, clinching its first berth in the ACC Championship field courtesy of a 0-0 draw with Clemson.

The Panthers last appeared in postseason play in 2010, back in the Big East.

Pitt is now set to square off against No. 4-ranked Notre Dame (14-2-1, 7-2-1 ACC) in a 2022 ACC Championship first round matchup at 6 p.m. Sunday at Alumni Stadium in South Bend, Ind. The contest will be televised live on the ACC Network.

 Pitt men’s soccer

The Pitt men's soccer team, ranked 23rd in the latest United Soccer Coaches Poll, played to a 1-1 draw against visiting Notre Dame on Friday evening at Ambrose Urbanic Field. The Panthers dominated play in the opening half before a red card early in the second half put Pitt a man down and tilted play during the final 43 minutes of action.

Pitt finishes the regular season with a 7-3-5 overall record and a 3-2-3 ACC mark. The Panthers earned the No. 6 seed in the upcoming ACC Tournament and will play host to No. 11 seed N.C. State at Ambrose Urbanic Field on Wednesday night.

The No. 7 Pitt (21-2, 11-0 ACC) volleyball teams continued its winning ways on Friday, sweeping Wake Forest (25-21, 25-13, 25-19) inside Reynolds Gym in Winston-Salem, N.C. The Panthers extended their winning streak to 14 matches, growing the nation's longest active road winning streak to 12.

Pitt outside hitter Courtney Buzzerio led the Panthers in kills for the 15th match in a row, finishing with 10. The Panthers found success in the middle, with Serena Gray and Rachel Jepsen combining for 12 kills on .611 hitting. Rachel Fairbanks led the way in assists (23) and digs (nine) while also posting six kills in an all-around strong effort. Valeria Vazquez Gomez delivered eight kills on 14 swings without committing an error (.571 hitting). Pitt made eight aces tonight, the most in an ACC match this season.

Duquesne volleyball

The Duquesne volleyball team took down Fordham, 3-1, Friday night at the UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse. Duquesne improves to 6-19 (3-10 Atlantic-10) while Fordham falls to 9-14 (3-9 A-10). All four sets were close (26-24, 22-25, 25-21, 25-20), with neither team winning a set by more than five points, but Duquesne came up clutch. The Dukes had four players with 11 or more kills to lead them. Anita Parrott, Elizabeth Osborn and Carsyn Henschen all reached 13 kills while Morgan Kelly put up 11 kills.

Robert Morris volleyball

The Robert Morris volleyball team earns its second win in Horizon League play as they defeated IUPUI, 3-2, in Moon Township. The Colonials (9-16, 2-11 Horizon League) won in a reverse sweep, 20-25, 19-25, 25-23, 25-22, 15-9. Abby Ryan led the Colonials with 20 kills, setter Kaitlyn Brown added a double-double with 47 assists and 10 digs and Allena Carmody chipped in 20 digs and 9 assists.

Pitt cross country

The University of Pittsburgh cross country men's and women's teams finished strong at the ACC Championship on Friday morning in Charlottesville, Va., at the Panorama Farms Cross Country course.

The men's squad took home 10th with 292 points, and the women's squad placed 13th with 368 points. In the men's 8,000-meter race, Jack Miller was the first to cross the finish line for the Panthers. Miller finished in 27th in 23:31.60, In the women's 6,000-meter race, Carey-Tharp was the first to cross the finish line on the women's squad. Carey-Tharp earned 58th place with a time of 21:04.60. North Carolina State won the women’s meet. Gionna Quarzo, of Brownsville, was the fifth runner for the Wolfpack and finished 16th overall to earn ACC honors.
