Thursday night’s storm won’t soon be forgotten by Roy Zack, 51,who said he was in bed with his girlfriend and their 1-year-old son when he heard "a big boom" and the bedroom window blew in, spraying glass over the three of them.
They were fine, but his garage was destroyed. They knew that Jake was under the rubble somewhere.
Mr. Zack said he had saved Jake from an abusive home five years ago. The two bonded, but Jake doesn't like kids, so — with three children in the house and a new baby on the way — Jake was living in the garage.
Mr. Zack feared the worst. The rubble of the garage was dimly visible as he stood in the dark, but he couldn't hear any sounds from the dog.
He dug through the debris in the dark for half an hour before he found the dog, hunkered down, shaking with fear, but alive and uninjured.
"For the life of me, I don't know how he's not injured, how he lived through that," Mr. Zack said. "It was a miracle.”
Now, Mr. Zack said, "I've gotta try to find a home for him."
The garage is gone, and he can't stay in the house because of the children.
Jake is safe in the basement right now, Mr. Zack said, but that's no good for the long term. He said he hopes maybe someone with one of the rescue centers will come and get him.
Jake needs a new angel.
