As former Peace Corps volunteers who served in Niger from 1988 to 1991, we witnessed firsthand the transformative impact of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The agency’s initiatives in agriculture, education, and health not only improved individual lives but also fostered goodwill towards the United States.
Cuts to USAID’s budget undermine decades of progress and damage America’s global reputation as a leader in humanitarian aid. Throughout Africa, USAID’s programs have been instrumental in combating food insecurity and promoting sustainable development. Eliminating them would leave vulnerable communities without essential support.
Moreover, foreign aid is not merely charity. It is a strategic tool that promotes stability and peace. Retreating from our commitments risks creating vacuums filled by less benevolent actors.
We urge policymakers to recognize USAID’s invaluable role and maintain, if not increase, its funding. Our nation’s commitment to aiding those in need reflects the core American values of compassion and leadership.
