We still haven’t caught up with Malcolm X

After college, while working at Columbia University Community Services, which provided food, scheduled medical appointments, and assisted many people of color find housing, I read “The Autobiography of Malcolm X”. Reading his life story had a huge impact. I bought several copies of the book to give people because it is a book that everyone should read. Over 30 years later, it is still one of my favorite books that I encourage people to read.

American history books do not cover Malcolm X’s leadership and work to improve our society and culture to make it more humanistic. The world has not caught up with his insight and wisdom. “The Autobiography of Malcolm X” should be required reading in our education curriculum.

Jeff Gerritt’s “Malcolm X was way ahead of his time” (Feb. 19) is a great summary of Malcolm X’s life and what he stood for. Malcolm X called out all injustice, inequity, and hypocrisy. The reason the Nation of Islam was annoyed with him was that he revealed the hypocrisy and unethical actions of their leader.

Thank you to Jeffrey Gerritt for his editorial on Malcolm X: a person who needs to be remembered and commemorated!
