No more queens (or kings)

Monarchies should no longer exist and are anachronistic in the modern world (“The end of the second Elizabethan Age,” Sept. 8). The notion that there is somehow a fundamental qualitative human difference between aristocrats and so-called commoners is utterly fraudulent. There is no such thing as royal blood, only plain old homo sapien blood. The Irish writer Fintan O’Toole points out that monarchies represent the idea that some people are born to rule while others are born to be subjects.

In democracies, people are citizens; in monarchies people are subjects, predetermined from birth to be lesser creatures, regardless of talent, education, or personal accomplishment. The British monarchy should be dismantled and relegated to history books and museums — and maybe Disney fantasies for very little girls, who seem to love them. The “once upon a time” formula seems like the right approach.
