Get going on climate

Tony Norman may be an “old boomer ranting on and on” (“Paving paradise for fun and profit is the point!” July 21), but he once again hits the mark dead on with his latest column: We’re sleepwalking our way toward further and increasingly intractable challenges with our changing planet.

And yes, there’s nobody out there to save us. It would be great if “countervailing voices in popular culture” would step forward, but can we wait?

Fortunately, there are paths forward. Those of us who believe that action is needed are not in the minority. According to the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication, more than 60% of Americans support policies aimed at reducing pollution that causes global warming.

Furthermore, there are plans that can work: Economists tell us that carbon taxes can help drive the fight against global warming, and returning those taxes back to citizens can offset the cost.

We have a problem. We’ve got solutions at hand. It’s time to tell our elected leaders — Sen. Casey, Rep. Doyle and others — that it’s time to act. What are we waiting for?
