A Pittsburgh Christmas

A Pittsburgh Christmas

In response to the Peter Vaira letter “Christmas When Pittsburgh Was a Steel Town,” (Dec. 24), it was a fantasy to a young boy being with his parents Downtown during the Christmas season, with all of the people in town crowding into town and everything being all lit up.

Gimbels, Horne’s and Kaufmann’s all had their windows decorated to the hilt. Especially Kaufmann’s — it had most of its Smithfield Street windows decorated like Christmas cards and had at least 100 white mice in each crawling among the scenery. This was in the early 1950s, and for a little boy, it was a wonderland to behold.
