Prescription drug ads: a good reason to turn off the TV

There is no shortage of reasons to be aggravated by TV content these days. The news is bad enough, but then we are also inundated by prescription drug ads, which are legal only in the U.S. and New Zealand.

Even the American Medical Association has strongly come out against them. In most ads it is not obvious what is being treated, but, what the heck, if this stuff makes these people feel this well, who would not want some?

I object to drug companies injecting themselves between people and their physicians, making their tough jobs tougher. These companies spend huge amounts of money on these ads and routinely raise prices of their products. It seems the media could take a stand against them and refuse to participate based on moral grounds. Don’t count on it, though. They richly benefit from this largesse.

The Food and Drug Administration should get involved. It is probably too much to expect, however, from our newly elected administration, which gets me back to the aggravating TV news content. Best to tune in PBS or turn off — which we do much more often these days.
