Diplomacy process

Diplomacy process

The Sept. 13 article "Tense Talks on Syria Begin" said "Secretary of State John Kerry said U.S. military forces remained poised to attack Syria if a credible agreement is not rapidly reached and implemented."

Although an agreement was reached over the weekend, I believe the secretary plus those Congress members who were anxious to get the U.S. people into yet another war need to be reminded that diplomacy is a time-consuming process, one that needs to involve the international community. The priority must be the welfare of the Syrian people.

Just as diplomacy and politics have the best chance of producing a lasting peace for Syria, it is democracy here at home that could provide a check against militarism and war.

We all need to keep reminding President Barack Obama and our senators and representatives that another war is not in the best interests of our country or of the people of Syria, and that diplomacy takes time.
