USPS deserves funding and support

There is a movement among some members of Congress and the president to defund the U.S. Postal Service. This is a really, really bad idea.

The USPS not only brings us bills, letters from families and friends, magazines and birthday presents, it connects us to the world outside our living rooms, bedrooms and kitchens. It’s invaluable to me as a poet by allowing me to send my latest physical book of poems to family members and friends.

The USPS makes it possible for sick, old or disabled people, or those whose jobs make voting difficult, to participate in our democracy. The USPS connects us one to another.

It is a truly democratic institution that deserves full federal funding as well as the support and thanks of a grateful country.
