Pittsburgh Regional Transit announced several service changes and road closures in Downtown and Oakland starting this weekend as it continues its PRTX University Line project.
Over the next two weekends from 6 p.m. on Fridays through 6 a.m. on Mondays, Sixth Avenue will be closed between Wood Street and Liberty Avenue, and Liberty Avenue will be reduced to two lanes between Seventh Street and Sixth Avenue as contractors perform roadway restoration work.
Buses 61A, 61B, 61C, and 71B will detour from their usual stop at Trinity Cathedral and instead pick up and drop off at the Smithfield Street and Sixth Avenue stop.
The buses will resume their normal service at 6 a.m. on Mondays both weeks.
In Oakland, PRT is restricting access to Forbes Avenue at McKee Place from 8 p.m. on Friday to midnight on Saturday for roadway restoration. A portion of Forbes Avenue in that location will be open to traffic, while McKee Place will be closed except for emergency vehicles.
The bus stop at Forbes and McKee will be closed. PRT is redirecting commuters to Forbes Avenue at Halket Street or Meyran Avenue.
On March 29, contractors are installing fencing in two locations: Forbes Avenue between McKee Place and Semple Street, and Forbes Avenue between Craft Avenue and Halket Street, to construct new sidewalks, curbs, sewer infrastructure, electrical conduits, and accessible ramps.
Work will take place from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m. every day other than Sundays through May at those locations. One travel lane and the sidewalks will be blocked during that time.
PRT began construction on the University Line in September 2023. Once completed at the end of 2027, the University Line will add 6 miles of transit corridor connecting Downtown, Uptown and Oakland.
