The northbound lanes on the Neville Island Bridge on Interstate 79 will be closed from 8 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Monday as part of a $43 million rehabilitation project. One southbound lane also will be closed.
The weekend work will include concrete repairs on the bridge and roadway, road patching, strip seal replacements, bridge painting, and repairing spalling on barriers.
Police will be available to help keep traffic moving, but motorists should expect delays. Other construction projects on the detour route will stop during the closure.
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s posted detour will have northbound motorists exit at the Coraopolis-McKees Rocks exit and turn left on Route 51 to continue through Coraopolis, then staying left to follow signs to Route 65 Sewickley. Turn right across the Sewickley Bridge, then right again on Route 65 south and take the left ramp to I-79. Stay straight to I-79 North Erie, then turn left on Kilbuck Street and take the northbound ramp to I-79 Erie.
Northbound motorists also could avoid the detour by taking the Parkway West (Interstate 376) to the Parkway North (Interstate 279).
Contractor Trumbull Corp. will have four weekend closures in the northbound direction this year and four in the southbound direction next year.
