U.S. Rep. Glenn Thompson says he has prostate cancer

The congressman said he will continue his work while undergoing treatment

WASHINGTON — U.S. Rep. Glenn Thompson, chair of the House Agriculture Committee, announced Tuesday that he has prostate cancer and would undergo treatment while continuing his work in Congress,

Mr. Thompson, R-Centre, said the cancer was discovered during his routine physical and subsequent tests.

“While this diagnosis is a surprise, I feel well, and I will continue my work representing the people of Pennsylvania’s 15th District,” he said. “Anyone who’s worked with me knows I am a person of faith as well as an eternal optimist, both of which will guide me as I undergo treatment.”

He added: “My faith in God is strong and I will tackle this head on. I appreciate both prayers and privacy during this time.”

Congress extends agriculture, nutrition programs as a new farm bill is delayed

First elected to Congress in 2008, Mr. Thompson, 64, became chair of the Agriculture Committee in January when Republicans took control of the House. He is shepherding legislation setting U.S. farm policy for the next five years, though it missed the original deadline for passing the legislation. Before running for Congress, he was a nursing home administrator.
