Henry “Bill” Areheart, of Scott, was a South Carolina transplant who found a true hometown in Pittsburgh.
A veteran of the Vietnam War who served two tours of duty and later worked pro bono at the Neighborhood Legal Services, Mr. Areheart died April 4 at the age of 90.
He grew up loving nature and trips to the beach in Dixiana, S.C. After attending rural schools, he earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Clemson University -- known then as Clemson Agricultural and Military College.
He decided to stay with the Army after the war, later serving in Germany, where he found an interest in other cultures, especially German music. He stayed in the military for 26 years, until his retirement in 1981, but he wasn’t planning to rest.
He married Lynda Manos in 1956 and they came to live in the Pittsburgh area, where Mr. Areheart earned a law degree from Duquesne University.
For 32 years, he worked at Neighborhood Legal Services, providing free legal advice and representation for those who couldn’t otherwise afford it.
He continued learning more about German music, joining the chorus at Teutonia Mannerchor -- in the Deutschtown neighborhood of Pittsburgh’s North Side -- serving as vice president of the organization and president of its chorus group.
He is survived by his wife, Lynda, of 68 years; and two daughters, Lisa (Ronald) Worsing of Pittsburgh, Heidi (Tim) Cherry of Louisville, Ky.; son of his heart, Ernest (Pam) Bolen of Oswego, Ill; and daughter of his heart, Bonnie Ramsey, of Columbia, S.C. He is also survived by eight grandchildren.
His private funeral, capped off last week with full military honors, was held at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church or the Teutonia Mannerchor Chorus.
