Sept. 17, 1960 – March 23, 2025

Daniel R. Garwig, former executive director of the Republican Committee of Allegheny County and a staff member for the late Sen. John Heinz, has died.

Mr. Garwig, of Upper St. Clair, died March 23 at the age of 64.

A native of Akron, Ohio, Mr. Garwig lived for a time with his family in Potomac, Md., before moving to Upper St. Clair, where he graduated from high school in 1978.

The youngest of three children, he transferred to the University of Pittsburgh from West Virginia University before going to work on Heinz’s staff.

After the senator died in a helicopter crash in 1991, Mr. Garwig served as executive director at the GOP committee from 1992 until 1994, under then-chairman Henry M. Sneath.

He worked for 16 years at Krome Communications as an advertising account executive.

Mr. Garwig loved sports, especially golf and football and rarely missed a Steelers game, often toting his grill to away games.

He was a youth baseball coach for his sons, Alex and Casey, and Mr. Garwig found other ways to include his family in his favorite pastimes, including weekend trips to Mountaineer Casino Resort in New Cumberland, W. Va., for horse racing.

Mr. Garwig and his wife, Patty, often traveled in search of their favorite rock music legends and to destinations like the Grand Canyon, Stone Harbor in New Jersey and Puerto Vallarta in Mexico.

Along with his wife and children, Mr. Garwig is survived by a sister, Janice Lang, of Abington, Montgomery County. He was preceded in death by another sister, Susan Garwig.
