WASHINGTON – Fallen New Kensington police officer Brian Shaw was memorialized on the U.S. House floor Tuesday, Congress’s first full day back in Washington after Thanksgiving break.
U.S. Reps. Keith Rothfus, R-Sewickley, and Mike Doyle, D-Forest Hills, offered condolences during separate brief speeches about the young officer who was shot during a traffic stop on Nov. 17.
“Brian Shaw was just 25 years old when he was murdered doing the job he loved. He was a universally loved and respected member of his community, and he was well liked and respected by his fellow officers,” said Mr. Doyle, whose district includes New Kensington.
“Brian said he became a police officer to make a difference. I want my colleagues and the whole nation to know that he did,” Mr. Doyle said.
Mr. Rothfus invoked religious doctrine in comments he directed toward Mr. Shaw’s family and friends. “The souls of the just are in the hand of God. No torment can touch them,” he said, quoting the Book of Wisdom.
He described Mr. Shaw as authentic, sincere and passionate about his work.
